Do You Know How To Properly Use A Plumbing Snake?

Sometimes Drano or Liquid Plumber is just not enough to completely clear that stubborn clog that has been building up in your drain. Before you give up and call a plumber, there is one more highly effective method of clog removal you might want to try. It’s actually a very simple and inexpensive way to keep all of your pipes clear and running smoothly (even the toilet!). A plumbing snake is a long metallic cord that can be extended down your drain and rotated in the pipe to remove clogs. They vary in size, being anywhere from 8 to 20 feet long, and are available at your local plumbing or hardware store. Knowing how to properly use the plumbing snake is a very useful skill to have when dealing with troublesome clogs throughout your house. Simply follow these steps and you’ll have clear drains in no time!

Wear Work Gloves

This may not seem like a job that requires work gloves, but it can actually save you some grief when trying to grip the snake as it is extended down the drain. You may also want the gloves regardless, since cleaning a drain can be a pretty messy job.

Extend the Plumbing Snake

Be sure to have a clear working space before you start to lower the snake into the drain. You want to hold the snake straight over the drain, and lower the end with the metal coil down into the pipe. Keep lowering until you hit some resistance. If you meet no resistance, but the drain is still clogged, you may need a longer pluming snake.

Spin the Plumbing Snake

Now that the snake has been lowered and is touching the clog in the pipe, use the handle at the top of the snake to turn the metal coil in the pipe. This will act as an auger which digs out the clog and loosens any other material that has built up. You may want to pour some water down the drain while you turn the handle to monitor how much the clog has been broken up.

Remove the Plumbing Snake and Clean Up

Once the water is draining steadily from the sink or toilet, slowly pull up the snake from the drain. Make sure not to do this too fast, as you can damage the inside of your pipes, or splash some dirt from the drain onto a clean surface in your house. Be sure to clean up any dirt that does emerge with the plumbing snake and put the tool back in its case.

There you have it. Now that you know how to properly use a plumbing snake, taking care of any clog in your house will be a cinch! For more helpful tips or information, visit our website or check us out on Twitter and Facebook.

What is the importance of Perimeter Drainage?

The purpose of perimeter drainage is to protect the integrity of your foundation by moving water away from your home. It is also referred to as a French drain system, weeping tile, or drain tile. Since the ground in Vancouver is generally damp, your perimeter drainage system is crucial in keeping your foundation and walls dry. It directs the water away from your home, alleviating the pressure that a buildup of water can exert on your retaining walls.

Water Damage

When water finds its way into your basement, it can create a lot of problems, including:

.   Structural problems with the walls and floor

.   Damage to any possessions you store in the basement

.   Erosion to the lawn

.   Mold and mildew growth

.   Excessive humidity

.   Dampness in your home

As time passes, each of these problems can become expensive to fix as they get worse. However, if you obtain regular maintenance on your drainage system, you can hire a professional plumber to take care of any problems with your drain tiles while they are still small and affordable.

Perimeter Drainage Services in Vancouver and Coquitlam

In many cases, homeowners do not notice a problem with their perimeter drainage system until a lot of damage has occurred. By that time, the trouble that you are experiencing (minor flooding, cracked walls, mold, and mildew) is just the tip of the iceberg, and you should expect a lot more problems to follow. Not only do you need to find the source of the trouble, but you must also resolve the issue with repairs and replacements.

A professional plumber handles the task of maintaining drain tiles, using each of the following strategies when required:

.   Cleaning of perimeter drains

.   Clearing of clogged sewer pipes

.   Clearing of tree roots

.   Replacement of weeping tiles

.   Replacement of trenchless pipes

.   Sewer connection repairs

Troubleshooting Problems with Drain Tiles

If water is leaking into your basement, it is possible that your drain tiles have become clogged or dislodged. Our plumbing specialist will inspect your system in an attempt to figure out what is wrong, using the following strategies:

.   Deployment of a sewer camera to search for blockages

.   Clearing of tree roots, dirt, stones, mud, and other blockages using a power snake

.   Flushing of the drain using a hose and a powerful flow of water

.   Replacement of damaged tiles

.   Realignment of dislodged tiles

.   Digging up the old system and replacing it with a new one

If the damage has spread to your home’s foundation or walls, you’ll need to hire someone to repair them. New drain tile installation is also available for new properties and additions, ensuring that water is properly diverted away from these structures.

What Are Drain Tiles and Drain Tile Systems?

Foundation drain tiles lay buried which makes them difficult to service. For this reason, careful installation of these tiles is essential. Drain tiles help drain ground water away from the home so that it cannot seep into or flood the basement. Drain tile systems are ideal for serving this purpose. Depending on the season, your drain tile system may be worth its weight in gold, especially in the spring when the rains increase. The water table rises and falls with the amount of rainfall. If the drain tiles aren’t properly maintained and become blocked or collapsed and the water table rises to ground level, the hydrostatic water pressure can crack the foundation causing 10’s of thousands of dollars in damage. Once a crack in the foundation is formed, it is typically its route of choice for ground water to take as it is the path of least resistance.

Drain tile systems are made up of the drain pipe, gravel, gravel cover, and a water outlet, (City connection or rock pit.). These features must be prepared and installed with expertise so that the system functions as it should with reliability. The functionality of the system depends upon gravity to achieve its end. JJ’s Custom Plumbing is a leader in the installation of these essential home features.
